How to write a book about your life (even if you're not a writer)

Many people say, “I'd love to write my life story, but I'm not a writer.” The good news is that you don't have to be. You only need to remember, and to tell it your way.

Choose the way that suits you

1. Writing by hand

If you like pen and paper, use a notebook with one chapter per section. A family member can type it up later.

2. Typing

If you are comfortable on a computer or tablet, type a little each day. Make the text larger so it is easy on the eyes.

3. Speaking out loud

Many people find talking much easier than writing. You can record yourself on a phone, or answer questions out loud and have the words turned into text. Your story keeps your own way of speaking.

4. With a helper

A son, daughter or grandchild can sit with you and ask questions. See our guide to getting someone to help write your life story.

How to start

  1. Make a list of the main stages of your life.
  2. Pick the easiest one to start with — not necessarily the first.
  3. Answer one question at a time. Our 100 life story questions can help.
  4. Set a small, regular time — say, after morning tea.

How long should it be?

There is no right length. A few thousand words is a lovely gift. Some people write much more. Write what feels right and stop when you have said what matters.

Turning it into a book

Once your stories are written, put them in order, add photographs with captions, and give it a title. You can print copies for family, or keep it online so relatives anywhere can read it.

Common worries

  • “My life wasn't interesting.” Your grandchildren will disagree. Everyday life from decades ago is fascinating to them.
  • “My memory isn't what it was.” Old photographs, letters and talking with family will bring memories back.
  • “I don't know where to start.” Start with one memory. That is enough.
